Biasteri, Álava, Spain – The San Pedro family has been producing wines in Laguardia, Rioja Alavesa for over 500 years. Their winery is located within the town walls underground of Laguardia. This location guarantees perfect temperature and humidity level, silence and darkness all year around.
During the start of our experience we were introduced to how they produced wine underground in the caves in Laguardia over 300 years ago. Hard to believe how strenuous the process was for these early wine producers. Every part of the process was extremely manual back then, however conducting this underground added an entirely different element.
After our vivid education about the history, it was time for us to venture down into the caves. What a first hand look at how this winery operates on a day to day basis. Down in cave we were able to climb a ladder along side the cement tank and barrel taste a future release. Even though the wine we enjoyed has two more years of cellaring it was drinkable already!
