Bodegas Ostatu

Samaniego, Álava, Spain – Ostatu is a family-run winery that makes high quality wines from its own vineyards. These vineyards are their greatest asset and their wines have been the way of life for various generations of the Sáenz de Samaniego family.

The winery is in the village of Samaniego, in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa region, at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria Mountains, surrounded by dolmens, ancient churches, and old wine-making pits etched into the ground – traces of an age-old culture of vine growing in this area.

The winery has been built around the family residence; a stately home dating from the eighteenth century.

The Sáenz de Samaniego family makes all their wines from their own vineyards, and all our wines are produced in such a way as to best guarantee their stability and quality.

When we visited the winery during harvest we spent a good bit of time exploring the production facility to understand how 5 generations have enhanced the wine making experience at Ostautu.

Humbleness would be the best way to describe this family.  The family spent quality time with us and made us feel right at home and were incredibly unpretentious.  While at the vineyard I checked out my iPhone to learn more about their wine to find that many of them had solid ratings by Robert Parker, however there was never a mention of any ratings by anyone or anything at the winery.

If you plan on visiting Ostatu check out this real interesting experience:
